It was mentioned in another thread that we could go in for Akinfenwa of Torquay. Well the BBC website seems to think we are already interested.

It would largely surprise me if city were going to sign him as he is only 5ft 11 where as Tinnion has statedhe wants a Target man.Although he don't have a bad scoring record from last season he averages a goal every 2 game as this website shows!

http://www.torquayunited.premiumtv.co.uk/p...5~27462,00.html

But if i was Tinnion i would stay away and actually go for a "Target Man"

Just looked at that myself,

5,11 surely isnt a target man and he'd have to wait behind 3 other strikers before getting a sniff at the starting line up!!

Whereas a 6ft + would always have an opportunity of playing as an extra option

A couple of days ago Torquay was sure that he was destined to join a Championship club. Maybe now that we have his former team mate that's where the rumours have sprung from.

Unless someone else leaves we are going to have too many strikers to keep happy again? Maybe Gillespie will be departing? Or even Leroy ,which seems unlikely if we are building for promotion? I rather have more options than not enough, but keeping them all fit and hungry isn't easy as has been proved. Maybe it was more down to the attitudes of the players why it was so difficult last season?

Brooker is 5 10 I believe and not bad as a target man so I don't see why Akinfewa would be bad back up if he is strong.

I think the only feasable reason to sign him would be if somethings going on with Lita.

I know, this then brings up the season long conversation of will he? wont he? again.

I'll be more positive when he signs the contract that he claims he has wanted since the end of the season but as yet has signed!!

He's a fat pig who can barely run. Can't remember exactly who (Clayton?) but one of our defenders gave him a 10 yeard start at their place and still caught him and tackled him. Thanks but no thanks.

He is certainly leaving Torquay because of the bust up with chairman/manager, but I don't think we need him. Now we have Stewart I don't think we need anymore strikers, what with him Lita, Brooker and Gillespie now etc

The only reason why I would want Adebayo Akinfenwa is so that he could dive and win some penalties like at AG last season when Tommy Doherty apparently fouled him. Otherwise I really do not see the point in getting him. He's a clumsy centre forward and he missed so many chances for Torquay against City at Plainmoor it's unbelievable.

From what I saw of him when we played Torquay at Plainmoor this season he can be a bit of a handful and got a couple of decent shots away, but is also a bit of a donkey sometimes. Tries one too many tricks and tends to get the ball stuck between his feet and then falls over!

Seeing him actually reminded me of when I saw Tony Rougier make his debut for us against Port Vale away - showed that he was a decent player underneath it all (and prooved it in future games), but he tried to hard to be clever and kept falling over!

Big, strong, played well in both games against us last season but his finishing was very poor at Plainmoor. I can recall a certain Mr Wayne Allison who was rated clumsy but he turned it around didn't he (BCFC top scorer for a couple of seasons AND in a higher division than we are now) and as Akinfenwa is 23 he has time on his side. Yes, I would have liked a more experienced 23yo but at least we may get some more penalties next season.

I think he would be a good addition to the squad.

He may not be the tallest but he's strong. A target man hasn't got to be tall.

I thought he was their best player by a mile at AG last season

It says on the main site that Tinnion is looking for another player in the Brooker mould and Akinfenwa is only an inch taller but more powerfully built than Brooker.Akinfenwa would provide competition for Brooker and is not a target man.

Target men are guys like Howard and Henderson and in the past Brett Angel and Devon White.Guys that could reach high balls without having to jump much.

I notice that Howard is still stalling on a contract at Luton. He'd be some signing for City.

300k?? who's spending 300k??

Thats his value quoted by Torquay, exactly, utter nonsence.

A tribunal would see that halfed, but still not worth it really.

EDIT: exact words.

"We have set a price of £300,000 - any club wishing to sign him must pay up or have the fee set by tribunal."

At least Dinning had a pedigree! Akinfenwa's previous clubs are Donny Rovers, Rushden &D, Leyton Orient, Barry town and not forgetting Boston Utd! It seems he is now too big for Torquay! biggrin.gif

Not a bad return 14 goals from 28 apps 9 as sub, but not worth spending a great deal of money on though.

As long as we didn't have to pay much money I'll be happy with him, Brooker is number one, so this guy is only cover, that's a hard role to sell to anyone, if he's happy to do it then fine.

Though from memory at Torquay away, yes I thought he was very awkward but half the time he just got the ball kicked it ahead of himself and head down tried to get there before Clayton.

Think Tinns is right going for another weighty striker though, you need cover for all positions and Brookers role is not covered especially with the transfer lid on the horizon.

What is it with this club and wanting to have too many strikers? At one point under Wilson we had Lee Peacock Tony Thorpe Steve Jones Lee Matthews Peter Beadle Marvin Brown Albano Correia and Damian Spencer all competing for 2 places. What a waste of transfer fees and wages.

The club has just done some superb business clearing out Miller and Heffernan for cash in this dead transfer market. The money will pay for Stewart's wages. We had it nice - Lita/Stewart/Brooker 3 for two places - with decent backup in Cotterill and Gillespie. 5 strikers for two places. So what does the club do? Look for more players to spend money on who will warm the bench, take a salary, and rarely play, who we will then want to move on in a few months a la Lee Matthews Steve Jones Peter Beadle but we'll be stuck with them. Also, according to Torquay this guy has an attitude and is greedy. Just what we don't need!

A further point. If we keep signing players over the top of Gillespie and Cotterill and never give them the chance when it comes around, then clearly we are wasting our money paying their wages. If they are good enough to be put in the first team when injuries hit us we shouldn't look to sign others, and if they are not good enough then they shouldn't be at the club drawing a salary. It was the same for Marvin Brown/Correia/Spencer who drew a salary for years but never got a fair chance. If they are good enough they should step in when there's an injury (and Cotterill is blatantly good enough) and if they are not good enough get them out of the club. This isn't rocket science, but it seems to have escaped the attention of a board that pride themselves on making shrewd financial decisions.

Sorry, rant over.

Spot on!

By far the best player against us at Ashton Gate this season. Small but still very strong, can hold the ball up. Also very quick and made their attack look very dangerous on the break. Why is everybody against him. Could make a very useful addition to our squad for the forthcoming season. I mean he scored 14 this season for a team who failed to create many chances and struggled. Sign him on!

We really really don't need another striker, even as cover.

I'd much rather we got in a centre back and left sided player first. We have 5 players capable of filling the spots up front, only Fortune really as cover for CB and and only Woodman as natural cover for Golbourne/Smith on the left. Not to mention goalkeepers....

It's not hard to keep the ball on the floor for a few games if Brooker isn't playing is it?! I'd assume Stewart and Lita would be the front two starting anyway, I sincerely hope he's not planning on playing all 3.
