City reserves battled out a 1-1 draw on the South Coast in an even and fairly entertaining game at Bournemouth.

Lee Matthews equalised for City on 26 minutes - just 5 minutes after Bournemouth had taken the lead following dreadful marking from a free-kick.

City lined up with Mike Stowell in goal, Mickey Bell at left back with a young back line of Aubrey, Simpson and Ryan Harley at right back. Aaron Brown started on the left of midfield with Clist and Hulbert in the centre. Lee McGuire played on the right with Matthews and Marvin Brown up front.

The opening to the game was fairly even - Matthews waddled around up front a.l.a. Beadle while Bournemouth's young team lacked the skill to create many problems for Stowell.

The first real action of the game was the goal. City conceded a free kick on their left and a good delivery left early substitue Dan Cann (no, really) with a free header. Stowell got a hand on it but couldn't prevent it going in the corner.

Aaron Brown nearly struck back immediately for City but his burst through the defence led only to a corner.

It wasn't long before parity was restored however, Lee Matthews produced a delightful chip from 20 yards which left the keeper stranded. Even the old duffers in the Bournemouth crowd clapped that one.

Brian Stock hit a free kick into the sidenetting for Bournemouth on the half hour while Jason Tindall blazed over from 5 yards out on the stroke of half time when it seemed easier to score.

City's young defence were being exposed positionally but Bournemouth didn't really have the quality to score more goals. Clist and Hulbert were tidy in midfield while the Brown brothers looked dangerous sporadically.

Lee McGuire had a couple of decent chances just after half time but still doesn't look worthy of the 1-year professional deal handed to him. He was later idiotically booked for kicking the ball away.

Marvin Brown and Clist combined well on 55 minutes but couldn't produce a finish as City took control. Minutes later Marvin should've done better when though on the keeper who nonetheless pulled off a good save.

By this stage Bell had gone off to be replaced at LB by Shaun Lamb (who?).

On the hour Tom Ridley's speculative shot from 25 yards was fumbled just wide by Stowell for a corner. 10 minutes later Bournemouth were celebrating as a s####py rebound was put in but the flag was rightly up for offside.

Marvin Brown was proving the most likely for City as Fatthews ran out of what little steam he had. Nathan Best (who?) replaced Aaron Brown as the game petered out.

1-1 was a fair result - City maybe just shaded it but an impressive display by the Bournemouth centre backs Tindall and Maher kept them at bay.

Ratings:

Stowell 6 - Not too heavily tested and made one bad fumble.

Bell 7 - Showed he was a class above with some silky touches.

Simpson 6 - Struggled a bit positionally against some lievly forwards.

Aubrey 6 - Always willing to put his head in but was a "whooosh" player today.

Harley 6 - Steady on the right side but again a little suspect positionally. Useful going forward.

Brown 7 - Dangerous in patches, showed his superior skill levels.

Clist 7 - Some lovely quick footwork and silky skills. Same old, same old.

Hulbert © 7 - MOTM. Neat, effective distribution and rarely gave the ball away.

McGuire 6 - Looked dangerous in patches but never consistently. Stupidly booked.

Fatthews 5 - Overweight and although he showed his talent with a cracking goal he's a long way from first team football at the moment.

M.Brown 6 - Always lively but never with the same presence Lita has in reserve matches. On his bike soon.

Can't comment on the subs as they didn't really get a kick. Best and Lamb came on while Stablier (gk), MacKay and Tom Osman were unused subs.

Decent little afternoon out - might even go and see AFC Bournemouth stuff the Gas this weekend.

Cheers,

BR

PS. Surprised to see the lads travelled in a Bristol Shoguns coach - on loan maybe?

Ta report Andy, had hopes of attending myself but got side-tracked; to answer your queries about the subs, they're all U/17s except Stabler who's the U/18 goalkeeper. And yes Sean Lamb is his real name!

don't tell me some of you go and watch the reserves???

I didn't........ but I wanted to..... why oh why oh why could it not have beeen the week before, when I was on holiday! :Rage:

Anyway.... great match report (as ever) and sounded a better game than the one we all saw back in September......OOOooooooo and that was not the reserves!

Thanks for the report, i actually find the progress and personel of the reserves quite interesting despite the disparaging comment above!

Doesn't look as though anyone is about to force some of our under performing first teamers out, but Aaron and Mickey seem to have played steadily and be fit so at least we've got more options. Carey not ready apparently.

On a personal preference note, please consider leaving out the phrase "parity was restored" in future to describe an equaliser! An equaliser is an equaliser, or even put City "on level terms" or "Bournemouth's advantage was nullified" or " City bounced back to equilibrium" any of the myriad phrases (admittedly some of these are almost equally irksome) available except "parity was restored", which drives i MAD. :Rage:

Apart from that small but important  criticism, a well written & informative report, cheers.
